2005-2006 Mexico Water Well Project

All District Governors attending the Zones 29 and 30 Institute in Memphis, TN in September 2005 decided to fund a Matching Grant project to drill a well in San Martin de las Piramides, Estada de Mexico, just outside of Mexico City.  We are working with the Rotary Club of Ojo de Agua and Rotary District 4170. The project was funded by the Rotary Club of Ojo de Agua, contributions of District Designated Funds from Mexico District 4170, all twenty-four districts of Zones 29 & 30 and The Rotary Foundation. Project size was $43,000.

The town of San Martin de las Piramides has approximately 25,000 residents. Their current water well was failing, with output decreasing rapidly and not able to provide all the water the village needed.  Engineers determined there was an underground river just over 1,000 meters below the surface which could supply all the needed water. This project funded the drilling costs and provided a water pump to be installed to pump the water into an existing water tank.

The application was submitted to The Rotary Foundation on November 9, 2005 and was approved on January 3, 2006.  The first installment of funds arrived in May 2006.

As of August 2007, the Rotarians in Mexico are waiting for the government to come and install the electric connections that will power the pump. Then the Rotarians can install the pump, the pumping column and well casing and put the pump into service.

A team of Rotarians led by D6560 Governor Martin Limbird traveled to D4170 in late February 2006 to visit the site and the local Rotarians. Another trip was made in February 2008.
